Why Decathlon?

Everyone loves outdoor activities and sports, but sporting goods do not come cheap very often. Unless there is a sale going on at stores such as Royal Sporting House, World of Sports, and so on. Finally, Decathlon is here in Singapore!

It is exciting, as it is the ultimate mega store that sports lovers have to patronise. Whichever sports you are active in - swimming, hiking, horse-riding, running, skating, golf, cycling... you name it, Decathlon has it. Absoutely true! Its selection is so wide that you would need some amount of time to shop around. You can't help but to take a trolley around with you, because you would be busying throwing in stuff.

Lowest price, widest selection?

Imagine, for a piece of swimwear you see at sports store, it goes up to SGD $119.00. After discount is SGD $75.00. At Decathlon, you can get a men's swimwear as low as $6.90 (E.g. NABAIJI B-Active Swim Boxers), and women's swimwear at $6.90 (NABAIJI LEONY WOMENS SWIMSUIT SKIRTED BLUE)! Too good to be true? Wait till you are there at the store personally to witness the price yourself.

My family and myself went to the store and came out with 4 pieces of goods, all only at SGD $75.60. Our loots! Boardshorts ($10.90) and swimwear ($10.90) for my husband, 18m baby NABAIJI Kloupi Girls' Legsuit ($39.90) and skirt swimwear ($13.90) for myself.






While waiting for my husband to complete the payment, I stumbled on kids sunglasses. These 2 seem good (aged 3to 6)... I only have 2 girls, so am only looking at pink or pastel colors... there are selections for boys too...

We could have gotten more but due to time constraint, we headed for home instead. But, we will be back again to hunt for kids sunglasses, inline skates and so much more!

Kids Activities – Ice Skating

With an increasingly change of climate, from warm to hot to even hotter weather, it is advisable for us to stay indoors.For kids who love outdoor, getting them to stay indoor is a boredom. However, kids need to play and sweat it out. Water playground seem a good thing, but some parents worry that kids would catch a cold from water play under the scorching sun. So, is there an activity that is indoor, air-conditioned, fun and exciting, and enables kids to workout?

The answer is... YES! Ice Skating!

Where can we skate in Singapore?

There are only 2 rinks in Singapore - Jcube (The Rink)

and Kallang Leisure Park (Kallang Ice World).

The Rink is located at level 3 of JCube, nearing Jurong East MRT Station, and Kallang Ice World is located at 5 Stadium Walk.  The Rink is the one and only Olympic-sized skating rink, measuring 30m x 60m. Before you head to the rink at Jcube, if you prefer to go there, do check the schedule and calendar of events for public skating to avoid making a wasted trip. Click here for the public skating session schedule. If Kallang Ice World is nearer, do make a call to 6348 1123 to ensure that the rink is available for public skating.

What are the admission charges?

Do note that each skating session is only 2 hours, and subjected to additional charges for subsequent 30 minutes.

What is the appropriate attire to go skating?

What you see on T.V. and YouTube are professional figure skaters, dressed in fancy costumes for competitions or exhibitions. The skimpy-looking costumes worn are aim to create the impression that the moves executed by the skaters are effortlessly done. And of course, the costumes are worn to suit the theme of the program skated.

For newbies who are completely new to ice skating, wear comfortable layered clothing to keep yourself warm. For bottoms, wear long pants/jeans to keep warm as well as to protect against falls. Prepare and bring along your own gloves and socks and/or skates (if you own one). Long, thick, cushioned socks are preferred to minimise the chances of blistering and friction of the boots.

If my kid wishes to take on courses, what are the charges and course outline?

Don't be surprise if your child comes up to you and tell you that he or she wants to learn skating. It is such an enjoyable sport that is worth taking up. I took some basic lessons in my teenage years and adulthood, and still is very passionate about it.

When you are unsure of whether your child would sustain the interest, try it out by enrolling him or her in a basic course. For younger kids (3 to 6), go for the "Kids Learn-to-skate" program, and slowing moving up the ladder. It is conducted every Tuesday 3-3:30 p.m. Currently for June 2016, the intake schedule is as shown

For basic skating, usually it teaches
- basic safety
- how to fall down and get up safely
- basic forward swizzles
- skating forward in proper posture and balance

Are there any official organisations in Singapore for competitive ice skating?

Singapore Ice Skating Association is the official platform in recognition and support of the sport. The site outlines all the happenings and events both in Singapore and overseas.
